David Kaplan: Yeah
Story
The mismatched cousins reunite for a tour of Poland to honor their beloved grandmother, but their old tensions resurface against the backdrop of their family history. When Benji and David visit their grandmother’s house in Poland, it’s where Jesse Eisenberg’s Real Ancestors settled in the diaspora for 39 years. Benji Kaplan: Staying mobile, staying light, staying agile. Benji Kaplan: The conductor walks by, takes our tickets, we tell him we’re going to the bathroom. David Kaplan: Bathroom. Benji Kaplan: He gets to the back of the train, starts heading forward, looking for stragglers. David Kaplan: Excuse me, are we stragglers?
Benji Kaplan: Yeah
By the time he gets to the front, the train will be at the station and we’re home for free. David Kaplan: That’s so stupid. The tickets are probably like twelve dollars. Benji Kaplan: It’s the principle of the thing. We shouldn’t have to pay for train tickets in Poland. This is our country. David Kaplan: No, no, it was our country.

They kicked us out because they thought we were cheap… 12 Etudes, Op. 25, No. 3 in F major Written by Frederic Chopin Performed by Tzvi Erez. I’ve always loved watching Jesse Eisenberg perform. He usually brings a nervousness and intelligent, fast-paced dialogue to the roles he plays. Now he’s won the Waldo Salt Screenplay Award at the Sundance Film Festival for the newly released film A REAL PAIN.
The script is nicely paced with a perfect mix of emotional beats and comedy
Eisenberg produced, wrote and directed this "drama" a study of the relationship between estranged cousins David (Jesse Eisenberg) and Benji (Kieran Culkin). David is the creator of a striking billboard ad featuring a woman and a child. Benji is a sensitive, very emotionally aware person grieving the loss of his grandmother, who he was very close to. Together they go on a trip to Poland where they are introduced to a group on a Jewish history tour, which obviously brings up a variety of difficult feelings. This is a beautiful film with fully developed characters that really develop as they go. It’s clear that they are both going through something, as is everyone in this. This is actually the second film Eisenberg has written and directed, the first being WHEN YOU FINISH SAVE THE WORLD, which is now on my list to watch.
Having said that, I can’t overlook Eisenberg’s performance
I knew when I saw SUCCESSION that Kieran Culkin was amazing, and he’s even better in this. In some ways, it’s harder to play an understated role that he’s great at. The film is about generational trauma, different kinds of pain, and the human condition. I hope real pain is talked about during awards season!
