A generational story about families and the special place they inhabit, sharing love, loss, laughter and life. Based on the comic book "Here" by Richard McGuire. It was first published as a strip in the comic book magazine "Raw" in 1989 and expanded into a 300-page graphic novel in 2014. At one point early in the film, Richard’s father lists several towns he thinks are on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, when in fact they are all towns on Interstate 80, PA, which had not yet been built. Whatever happened to Robert Zemeckis. Zemeckis has previously created such classics as “Forrest Gump, the Back to the Future trilogy, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, The Polar Express”; and many other great works that I grew up with. However, after The Walk, his work is disappointing and, to put it mildly, disappointing. This film has a truly ambitious and interesting concept, but unfortunately, despite some serious and interesting moments, Zemeckis does not experiment with this concept and it becomes tedious and unpleasant. The camera concept remains in one place and the narrative feels ambitious. and creative. With themes that are interesting and could be innovative in their exploration, but Zemeckis’s direction and the film’s lack of emotional depth ruin what could have been a good film. The emotional weight and engagement are suffused with bloated plotlines, unbalanced structure, and characters that aren’t fully developed. It’s almost as if Zemeckis saw The Tree of Life but somehow missed what makes The Tree of Life amazing, and made it mediocre and boring. It delivers some glaring issues with dialogue and pacing. The production design and camerawork are really good, plus the CGI for the face swapping is pretty solid with color and movement. All the performances are good, because it’s nice to see Tom Hanks and Robin Wright together again, because they have good chemistry and scenes together. But it fails because it’s a sloppy and rigid approach that doesn’t really do it justice. Robert Zemeckis will always be one of my favorite directors.
